Sarah Boone was murdered on January 26, 2006. On that day, her body was discovered by her manager in the basement bathroom of her workplace, Cricket Catering, in Ardmore, PA, with multiple injuries, blunt trauma, and sharp force. She had bled to death after being stabbed with both a knife and scissors, bludgeoned with a hammer, and stomped on. Police named Jacuqin Jaron Byrd, then 27 and formerly of Philadelphia, as the suspect in the brutal murder. Byrd initially denied going to Ardmore that day, but evidence showed Sarah had left her employer a note stating that Byrd had stopped by earlier. Byrd was found to be a former employee. Dr. Ian Hood, the forensic pathologist who performed Sarah’s autopsy, confirmed that Sarah did not suffer a quick death. Hood concluded that Sarah initially fought off her attacker, citing the defensive wounds on her hands to back up his claim. Finally, Hood surmised that the attacker changed weapons during this “relatively prolonged struggle,” and that Sarah was immobilized or even knocked unconscious by several blows to the head that were most likely caused by the use of a hammer or similar object. As Sarah lay on the floor, her attacker also stomped on her head several times. In March 2007, Byrd was convicted of first-degree murder along with third-degree murder, theft by unlawful taking, falsely authorizing written statements, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a weapon. DNA evidence placed him at the scene of the crime. In May the same year, Byrd was given a mandatory life sentence for Sarah’s murder. Byrd is currently serving his life sentence at The State Correctional Institution at Mahanoy in Frackville, PA, a medium-security level male prison. The Cricket Catering at 248 E. Spring Avenue, where Sarah was murdered, is now permanently closed.
