Woman Adopts Unwanted Boy: See His Transformation

Particularly for those with disabilities who struggle to conform to societal expectations, this world can often feel unwelcoming. These individuals long for acceptance and a sense of belonging; however, they frequently face hurtful glances and remarks from others.

Rustam is a young boy born with significant birth defects that his parents were unable or unwilling to address. Consequently, he was placed for adoption, but the reality is that prospective parents often hesitate to adopt children with his needs.

In a fortunate turn of events, Rustam was discovered by Nika Zlobina, who stumbled upon his photo and profile while preparing adoption paperwork. This encounter set her on a mission to find Rustam a loving home, a mission that ultimately led to her adopting him herself.

“I was preparing paperwork for an adoption and there was a database with photos of children, and I happened to see images of Rustam,” Nika explained in an interview. She then set up an Instagram account to highlight children in need of families, including Rustam. One video of Rustam dancing gained significant attention, garnering both positive and negative feedback. “Some said this ‘freak’ won’t ever be adopted. I was shocked by how many people wrote negative comments, including young mothers with their own children,” Nika recounted.

Nika was determined to challenge the misconception that adopting a child with a disability is not a viable option. She believed that by sharing Rustam’s daily activities, his many smiles, and his happiness when surrounded by loving people, others would see the importance of caring for children like him.

“Everyone mostly wants blond, beautiful babies to adopt, and there’s a long line for such kids; meanwhile, others suffer without parents,” Nika wrote candidly. Her decision to adopt Rustam herself was a natural next step. She and her husband were ecstatic to welcome this joyous little boy into their family.

Nika’s actions have inspired others to consider adopting children with unique needs. “One woman wrote that she was afraid to go out with her daughter who has Down Syndrome, but my posts give her courage; and now she doesn’t hesitate to take her daughter out for walks,” Nika shared.

Despite the occasional negative comments and looks from strangers, Nika and her husband strive to protect their son and promote the idea that being different is not a disadvantage. In fact, diversity is what enriches and sustains our world.

Today, Rustam is nine years old and thriving in a loving and supportive environment.
