Oprah Defends ‘Childless Cat Ladies’ at Audience Event

A woman at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) found herself in an awkward moment when Oprah Winfrey referenced “childless cat ladies” during her speech on Wednesday night.

During her endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, Winfrey triggered the memory of J.D. Vance’s previous criticism, suggesting that the United States was being managed by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives.”

In her speech, Winfrey advised, “When a house is on fire, we don’t ask about the homeowner’s race or religion… We just try to do the best we can to save them. And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady, well, we try to get that cat out too.”

Immediately following this comment, the broadcast awkwardly cut to a woman in a blue dress who seemed to turn in an attempt to evade the camera after Winfrey made that remark, highlighting the unfortunate timing.

Buzzfeed reporter Spencer Althouse remarked on social media, “I’m screaming at the DNC cutting to this random woman when Oprah made a ‘childless cat lady’ comment, taking a page from Wendy Williams’ cameraman, lol.”

As the camera focused on the woman in the crowd during Winfrey’s comments, reactions on social media were swift. Dale Tegman tweeted, “Representation matters: justice for childless cat ladies. WE SEE YOU GRRL.”

The woman later identified herself and managed to appreciate the humor in the situation. Maryland Delegate Teresa S. Woorman shared her thoughts on social media, stating, “Damn right this childless cat lady is 100% disgusted by J.D. Vance in general and 100% behind @KamalaHarris and @GovTimWalz! Also, I may be childless, but I do hope that’s not a permanent condition, thanks!”

Woorman responded to Althouse’s post about the footage, emphasizing, “I’m having a great time at the DNC.”

Vance’s controversial comments resurfaced during the ongoing political discourse as he was recognized as former President Donald Trump’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election. His remarks from 2021 about childless women garnered significant attention and were considered derogatory by many.

He said in a conversation with Tucker Carlson, “The US is run by ‘a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too.”

Maryland Delegate Teresa S. Woorman, who is a dog owner, displayed a great sense of humor about being part of the broadcast. She rejected Vance’s view, underlining that the future of the Democratic Party is driven by inclusion and diversity, irrespective of parental status.

In the larger context, Winfrey’s appearance at the DNC was significant as she encouraged independents and undecided voters to support Harris. “We are beyond ridiculous tweets and lies and foolery,” Winfrey stated. “These are complicated times that require adult conversations.”
