Not all liberals are unconditionally supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. While prominent media outlets often showcase endorsements from figures like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), the recent repeal of an endorsement from one of the nation’s most influential pro-Palestinian collectives has gone largely unremarked. This shift signals critical challenges Harris faces within progressive circles.
The Uncommitted National Movement, known for advocating Palestinian rights and a cease-fire with Hamas, made waves on X by announcing that a coalition of Muslim women supporting the Harris-Walz ticket has withdrawn its backing. Though Muslim Women for Harris-Walz does not have direct ties to the campaign, the coalition had previously harbored hopes that the Democratic Party would feature a Palestinian speaker during the Democratic National Convention, which recently drew thousands of protesters to Chicago. The decision to disband, according to the coalition, was prompted by the Democratic Party’s rejection of their request.

“We cannot in good conscience continue Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, given the recent revelations from the Uncommitted movement about VP Harris’ team declining our request for a Palestinian American speaker at the DNC,” stated the coalition on X. “The family of the Israeli hostage who spoke at the convention has shown more empathy toward Palestinian Americans than our candidate or the DNC. This sends a troubling message to Democrats. Palestinians deserve their voices to be heard on this issue. We implore the DNC and VP Harris’ team to rectify this oversight before the convention concludes, as it impacts all of us.”

This development poses a significant challenge to Harris’s strategy of reconciling the progressive Jewish and pro-Palestinian factions within the Democratic Party. The violent outbreak resulting from Hamas’ October 7th attack, which claimed the lives of 1,400 Israelis and took hundreds hostage, has intensified discussions about the boundaries of advocacy for Palestinian issues in the context of escalated violence. The resulting Israeli military responses, including operations that have led to substantial civilian casualties in Gaza, have fueled anti-Israel protests on college campuses and vigorous demonstrations outside the DNC.
During the Democratic primary elections, the Uncommitted Movement attracted significant attention, capturing up to 15% of Democratic voters in certain states, who expressed dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden’s continued military support for Israel. This protest vote indicates a prevailing sense of disillusionment among younger, progressive voters regarding the party’s stance on foreign policy, particularly in relation to Israel and Palestine. Although early protests at the DNC witnessed tensions escalate, leading to confrontations, subsequent days saw demonstrators maintaining a more controlled presence. This sentiment, however, has undoubtedly influenced the party’s decision-making, with critics suggesting that figures like Pennsylvania Governor Joshua Shapiro—a steadfast advocate for Jewish causes—were excluded from potential running-mate discussions to avoid alienating pro-Palestinian supporters.
