Joni Sledge was best known for being part of the 1970s group, Sister Sledge. Along with her sisters Debbie, Kim, and Kathy, she was taught to sing by her grandmother, Viola Williams, a former lyric soprano opera singer. Under Viola’s guidance, they sang at their family church and later performed at charity and political events. In 1971, the sisters formed the group Sister Sledge and for the next several years, they had minor success. The group’s fortunes turned when they met Bernard Edwards and Niles Rodgers of the hit group, Chic. The pair wrote and produced the group’s most famous album, “We Are Family,” in 1979, which consisted of their biggest hit songs “We Are Family” and “He’s The Greatest Dancer”. The album also contained the classic disco singles “Lost In Music” and “Thinking of You”. They were nominated for a Grammy and “We Are Family” became the theme song for the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates World Series-winning team. They later released several other albums with moderate success. In 2015 they performed for Pope Francis at the world Festival for Families in Philadelphia. Joni died in 2017 of natural causes at age 60. #grave #cemetery #mausoleum #graves #cemeteries #cemeterylovers #cemeterywandering #cemeterybeauty #cemetery_shots #cemetery_nation #cemeteryexplorer #cemeteryexplorers #famous #famouspeople #famousgraves #famousgrave #graveyard #gravephotographer #gravestone #gravestones #taphophile #taphophilia #celebritygraves #jonisledge #sistersledge #wearefamily #1970s #disco #popmusic
