Four Friends Promise to Meet in Forty Years, Three Men Show Up and Find Note Saying I Am Not Coming – Story of the Day

Four high school buddies—Ben, Todd, Willie, and Karl—agreed to meet again at Santa Monica beach 40 years after they graduated. On June 11, 2017, only three of them made it; Karl was absent.

The friends reminisced about old times but became anxious when Karl didn’t show. They discovered a note on a bench: “I’m not coming. I love you, pals. —Karl.” Confused, they visited Karl’s nephew, Andrew, who disclosed Karl’s difficulties.

Karl had fabricated his success. He endured a spinal injury, lost his job, and suffered financial woes. Despite these issues, he kept his struggles hidden from his friends due to embarrassment.

Dedicated to helping, Ben, Todd, and Willie traveled to Spain to find Karl. They found him living humbly and using a crutch. Overcome with feelings, Karl admitted his hardships. Though upset at his secrecy, his friends immediately devised a plan to aid him. “Pack your things,” Willie instructed. “We’re taking you to Los Angeles and then to Mexico for a fresh start.” Reunited, they spent a few joyful days in Spain before flying back, prepared to tackle the future together.
